Periodontal treatment

Depending upon the degree and type of disease, periodontal treatments will vary. After our dentist and dental hygienist have evaluated your teeth for periodontal disease, they will recommend treatment as appropriate.

What causes Periodontal and Gum Disease?

When the pocket between the gums and the tooth (the sulcus) becomes full of tartar, plaque, and bacteria, it causes irritation to the gums. This is called periodontal disease. Damage to the gums and the jawbone can occur if these irritants stay in the pocket space. The word periodontal literally means “around the tooth.”

Sleep Apnea Dentist Mexico

If I were to tell many sleep apnea patients that a dentist could help them, many would just turn round and say, “What are you, crazy?” But the truth is that these professionals have helped many sufferers with their condition. They are especially useful when used as part of a multi-disciplinary team to manage the condition. And in some areas you will actually find specialist sleep apnea dentists. So what can they do for you?

A specialist dentist or orthodontist can use oral appliances to move the position of the jaw and tongue to overcome some of the problems associated with obstructive sleep apnea. This is the most common type of sleep apnea and occurs when the airway is blocked by the soft tissues at the back of the throat. This leads to the person stopping breathing for short periods during the night, called apneas. These periods can last 10-20 seconds and occur many times throughout the night.

Disturbed sleep and daytime tiredness are two of the features of this condition. But sleep partners will be all too aware of one of the other symptoms of the disorder – loud snoring. It is not uncommon that a whole household has their sleep disturbed because of this.

There are two types of device that a sleep apnea dentist may use to overcome this problem. The first is a mandibular advancement device and the other is a tongue-retaining device.

Mandibular advancement devices move the jaw forward. This also moves with it the tongue and soft tissues at the back of the throat. This makes it less likely that the airway will be obstructed. These devices are made of acrylic or thermoplastic and are individually made to suit the patient. A tongue-retaining device has a compartment where the tongue is held by suction. This maybe useful for patients that have few or no teeth.

These appliances can be effective for overcoming snoring as well as sleep apnea. The best chances of success tend to be for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea.

As with using other medical devices there can be a period of adjustment that is necessary by the patient. This can be due to aching or pain in the jaw and either a dry mouth or increased salivation. Talk these issues over with your sleep apnea dentist so that you can both come to a solution that works best for you.

What is a Cosmetic Dentist, Mexico

There are a lot of dentists who are not really cosmetic dentists but call themselves one. The problem is that cosmetic dentistry is not really a legally recognized specialty. So any dentist can say that he is a cosmetic dentist because there are no clear legal restrictions. There are some dentists who think they already know all about cosmetic dentistry just because they have years of experience in the use of dental fillings and crowns. But there is actually extra training before becoming a legitimate cosmetic dentist which can take years.

Cosmetic dentists received training in order for them to create implants and dental appliance and not just to remedy minor teeth problems. They pay a lot of attention to detail together with creativity. Here’s a common scenario: A patient comes up to a general dentist stating that something is wrong. There are times when the general dentist will say there is nothing wrong with the patient’s teeth, but actually, the patient is not just referring to his teeth, but the overall appearance of his smile which only a trained and cosmetic dentist can understand.
It takes more than just scientific knowledge to become a cosmetic dentist. One actually has to use a lot of communication skills. A cosmetic dentist has to know what a patient wants. A general dentist simply diagnoses the surface problem, and then fixes it. On the other hand, a cosmetic dentist determines or identifies what is needed to attain what the patient wants.
A cosmetic dentist can also help in improving overall personality. He can help you not only with your appearance, but can also improve the way you speak or improve your eating habits as well. So not only can he improve your overall look by a smile makeover, but can also help you improve you as a person.

Single Tooth Anesthesia comes to Chula Vista Eastlake Dentist San Diego

San Diego’ Cosmetic dentist Aldo M. Espinosa D.D.S, is pleased to announce that they’ve arrived at the future of dental anesthesia.

The Bonita Del Rey is one of only a few San Diego dentists to use this system.

Using a new computerized system called Single Tooth Anesthesia, the precise quantity of anesthetic is administered with a tiny needle, will numb just the precise area that is being worked on in any dental procedure. After, the patient can carry on their day without the typical numbness and embarrassing drooling typified by traditional, widespread anesthetic.

Make an appointment and try it out.

    Keep Your Childs Teeth Healthy

To ensure your child’s smile lasts a lifetime, it’s important to instill good dental hygiene habits in them from a very young age. But it’s not always easy to get children to adopt a new habit; especially a habit they may consider a chore. The following article offers three suggestions for teaching children proper dental hygiene habits.
Regular Visits To A Pediatric Dentist
A pediatric dentist can be an invaluable asset when it comes to teaching your child proper dental hygiene habits. A pediatric dentist is required to take an additional two years of training after receiving their Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. During this time, they learn about the special oral and dental needs of children from infancy through adolescence.
Because a pediatric dentist understands how a child’s dental needs differ from that of an adult’s, they are better equipped to teach children healthy habits that will last a lifetime. They can explain the importance of good dental hygiene to children in a non-confrontational manner that they can understand, and show them how brushing and flossing can be made fun.
Regular trips to a pediatric dentist will also help your child feel more at ease about going to the dentist, and will encourage continued good habits so they receive positive check-ups. Most dentists recommend children start regular appointments around their first birthday, and begin brushing around age 2 or 3.
    Make It Fun
When you’ve got to do it twice a day… every day… brushing can sometimes seem like a chore. And flossing certainly isn’t a walk in the park either; especially for young children. To establish good habits and make these tasks seem less onerous, make it fun!
Manufacturers have quickly caught on to the fact that children don’t like to brush their teeth. A quick trip down the oral health isle at the store presents an array of options to make brushing more fun. Colored, glittery toothpaste, character toothbrushes, electric toothbrushes, and rinses that leave colors behind where teeth weren’t thoroughly clean can all make brushing seem like more of a game than a chore.
Other ways to liven up your child’s toothbrush time are to put on their favorite song and brush to the music, use brushing as a competition between siblings (who has the cleaner teeth?), and reward your child for good habits (like brushing without being reminded and good check-ups at the dentist).
    Set An Example
Monkey see, monkey do! A child who sees their parents exhibiting proper dental hygiene habits is more likely to follow suit. Even on those days when it truly does feel like a chore, remind yourself that your kids are watching you.
To really recognize the benefits here, rearrange your routine so that you can brush your teeth while your child brushes theirs. Brushing and flossing together has a three-fold advantage: you can teach your child healthy habits, make it fun for each other, and set a good example.
